My view on national security as an army officer candidate

The responsibility of ensuring national security as a Korean army officer candidate is an honor and a challenge

I have examined the important role of army officer candidates for the security of the Republic of Korea and explored the multifaceted nature of security challenges, including military, political, economic, and technological aspects facing the country. I have also provided insights into the direction that should be considered for our professional development to effectively contribute to national security as aspiring officer candidates.

South Korea stands at a geopolitical crossroads, facing security challenges that demand seamless leadership and strategic thinking. As a candidate for an army in the Republic of Korea, I believe it is essential to have a comprehensive understanding of the roles and responsibilities that officers undertake to protect the nation, considering the evolving aspects of security threats.

I see three main tasks that I need to address in the future. Firstly, there is the threat from North Korea. The ongoing tension on the Korean Peninsula is a significant security challenge. Understanding the complexity of North Korea's military capabilities, political motivations, and potential provocations is crucial.

Secondly, there is cybersecurity. In the digital era, cyber threats can target critical infrastructure and compromise sensitive information, posing a threat to national security. Soldiers need to stay updated on emerging cyber threats and work to enhance South Korea's cyber defense capabilities.

Thirdly, there is geopolitical awareness. Our national security is intertwined with a broader regional context, and soldiers must be well-versed in neighboring countries' relationships to promote stability and cooperation.

I believe that junior officers, including aspiring candidates like me, need two key qualities to supplement these challenges. Firstly, leadership is essential. Officers inspire, guide, and motivate their teams, playing a pivotal role in leading them. Strong leadership skills, effective communication, and the ability to make informed decisions under pressure are crucial.

Secondly, strategic thinking is vital. To address multifaceted security issues, soldiers need to think strategically, considering both short-term and long-term implications of their actions. I recognize that I still have much to improve in these aspects, but I am committed to continuous effort and proving my capabilities.

Ensuring national security as candidates for officers in the Republic of Korea Army is both an honor and a challenge. By understanding diverse security challenges, honing essential skills, and embracing a mindset of continuous learning, officers can make substantial contributions to the defense and prosperity of South Korea.

Based on the aforementioned points, I plan to start studying English conversation and TOEIC to enhance our country's security. Currently, due to the South Korea-US alliance, there is substantial interaction with US forces, and one of my goals in my future military life is overseas deployment. However, I believe that my English conversation and TOEIC skills are lacking compared to others, so I intend to prepare step by step starting from now as an aspiring officer candidate.

I am aware that I still have a long way to go before becoming an officer, but throughout the remaining two years in the Department of Military Science, I will take inspiration from professors working diligently for the sake of my fellow students and seniors who strive day and night. By doing so, I'll be a dashing army officer in the future.

My father is also a former officer, and my grandfather is a man of national merit. I will uphold the commitment to protect our country, which has been passed down from my father, grandfather, and fellow seniors. National security and the safety of citizens are values that nobody can ignore, and I believe it is our responsibility to continuously work and dedicate ourselves to the country and its people.

General An Jung-geun left the phrase 'The duty of a military man is to devote himself to the country' as his legacy. I have carried this phrase in my heart since I began to dream of becoming a military officer, believing that it is our responsibility to protect the safety of the nation and its citizens.

As aspiring officer candidates, the efforts we can make for national security involve cultivating our individual abilities, undergoing thorough training, and improving our physical fitness. While there may not be numerous efforts that we, as citizens of the Republic of Korea, can undertake to protect national security, there are various ways to express our love for our country."
