The 3rd Korea-Malaysia Climate Change Dialogue to strengthen cooperation between Korea and Malaysia on responding to climate change was held on August 25, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The meeting was led by Chung Keeyong, Ambassador and Deputy Minister for Climate Change from Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Datuk Nor Yahati binti Awang, Deputy Secretary General for Environmental Sustainability at Malaysia’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, as chief delegates.

Officials from related government ministries and agencies, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Environment, the Sudokwon Landfill Site Management Corp., and the Korea Environment Corporation, also attended the meeting.

The Korea-Malaysia Climate Change Dialogue was newly established during the Korea-Malaysia Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in May 2023 to strengthen bilateral cooperation on climate change response. The first meeting was held in Malaysia in October 2023, and the second meeting was held in Korea in September 2024.

At this meeting, the two countries presented their domestic climate change policies aimed at achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 and exchanged views on the main negotiation trends related to the 30th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP30), to be held in November this year.

Furthermore, they discussed the Basic Agreement on Bilateral Climate Change Cooperation and international mitigation projects* between the two countries utilizing Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement.

The Korean side introduced the government’s climate change response policies, including Korea’s implementation of the NDC, the emissions trading system, and the national climate crisis adaptation plan.

In addition, Korea’s environmental integrity standards for Article 6.2 projects under the Paris Agreement and the Korea-specific Readiness program designed to support greenhouse gas reduction in host countries of international mitigation projects were also presented.
