Foreign Minister Cho, U.S. Secretary of State Blinken exchange views by phone

Following the announcement of emergency martial law

Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul spoke with U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken to exchange views on the current domestic situation and U.S.-ROK relations on Dec. 6, 2024.
 

The two officials exchanged views on the developments in Korea over the past few days following the announcement of emergency martial law and reaffirmed the United States' unwavering support for South Korea's democracy and the U.S.-ROK alliance.

 

 

Mr. Blinken praised the strong resilience of South Korea's democracy and expressed his strong hope that all future political disagreements will be resolved through a peaceful and democratic process, and the two officials agreed to continue close communication at all levels between the United States and South Korea.

 

Prior to the call, Minister Cho met with U.S. Ambassador Philip Goldberg to South Korea on the afternoon of December 5 and provided a detailed account of the situation in the days following the announcement of martial law.

 

The two sides agreed that South Korea's democracy, the strong U.S.-ROK alliance, and the United States' unwavering defense commitment to South Korea must be maintained, and they will work closely together to do so.
