Discussed expanding cooperation in blue economy and tourism

By Kayla Lee

President Yoon Suk-yeol, who was in New Delhi, India, to attend the G20 Summit, held a summit with Mauritian Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth on Sept. 10.

During the meeting, the President requested Mauritius' support for the 2030 Busan World Expo and exchanged views on ways to develop bilateral relations.

The President expressed his hope that the bilateral relationship will develop further based on the common ground of stable democracy and open economy, and said that Korea would like to expand cooperation with Mauritius, a key country in the Indian Ocean littoral Africa region.

Jugnauth appreciated the bilateral cooperation projects in infrastructure, agriculture, public administration, and education, and agreed that there is great potential for cooperation in areas such as the blue economy (a concept proposed as a growth strategy for the maritime economy, which refers to the sustainable use of marine resources) and tourism, and called for expanding bilateral cooperation to this end.

The President invited the Prime Minister to host the Korea-Africa Summit in Seoul next year. The Prime Minister thanked the President for the invitation, appreciated the Korean government's commitment to strengthening diplomacy with Africa, and wished the Summit a successful outcome.

Mauritius is an economic leader in the African region and a geopolitically important Indian Ocean island nation, making it a key partner in the Korean government's 'Integral Strategy'.

Through the summit, in-depth discussions were held on ways to strengthen the relationship between Korea and Mauritius, and it is believed that the summit laid the foundation for a future-oriented partnership between the two countries.
