On April 14, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol held meetings with Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly and French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna during their official visits to South Korea. President Yoon expressed his expectation that the potential for further development in the relationship between South Korea and Canada, which marks its 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations this year, will be fully realized.

During his meeting with Joly, President Yoon acknowledged the warm reception he received during his visit to Canada in September of last year. He further communicated his aspiration for South Korea and Canada to take the lead in international endeavors to enhance human rights in North Korea, and underscored the importance of collective action among nations for the sake of freedom and human rights.

In addition, President Yoon engaged in discussions regarding the future direction of South Korea-Canada relations with Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau, with whom he plans to meet again in the near future.

The meetings with the foreign ministers of Canada and France highlight South Korea's persistent commitment to strengthening diplomatic ties with its key partners around the world. In particular, the meeting with Joly represents a positive stride in the development of South Korea-Canada relations, which have been burgeoning in recent years through high-level exchanges and enhanced economic cooperation.

Both South Korea and Canada are members of the G20 and share fundamental values such as democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. The two nations have also been collaborating closely in various realms including trade, investment, and cultural exchanges. As the two countries celebrate their 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations this year, President Yoon's meeting with Joly serves as a reminder of the potential for further expansion in the partnership between South Korea and Canada
